What are the stages of a franchise recruitment funnel?
A franchise recruitment funnel has four stages that matter: lead, qualification, discovery call, signed agreement. Each has its own drop-off and its own fix. Most franchisors only measure the first, which is why the middle of the funnel leaks for months without anyone seeing it.
What happens at each stage?
| Stage | What it is | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Lead | A form fill | Cost per lead, by source |
| Qualification | Can this person fund and run a territory? | Share graded Qualified, cost per Qualified lead |
| Discovery call | Fit tested both ways | Show rate, time from lead to first call |
| Signed agreement | The only stage that grows the network | Cost per signed franchisee |
The last number is the one that maps to growth. The others exist to explain it.
Where do most networks lose candidates?
Between qualification and the discovery call. Development teams spend their hours on candidates who were never going to fund a territory, so the ones who could sign wait, and waiting candidates go cold. Grading every lead Qualified, Nurture or Disqualified on arrival means the right people get the calendar first.
Why does the first conversation matter so much?
Because candidates research several networks at once, and the first credible conversation frames every comparison after it. The registration isn't the commitment; the first real conversation is. More in how fast to call a franchise candidate.
How does a mandatory waiting period change the funnel?
In Australia, a candidate must receive the disclosure document at least 14 days before signing, and has a 14-day cooling-off period after. The funnel is a multi-week consideration window, not a form. Funnels built for a fast close go quiet once the wait starts, and candidates cool off inside it. The networks that convert use that window for validation conversations and structured follow-up. How should the funnel be run?
- Fix the tracking and intake leaks before adding spend.
- Grade every lead before it reaches sales.
- Track every stage to the signed agreement, by source and territory.
- Scale only where the cost per signed franchisee holds.
On Resicert's network across Australia and New Zealand, cost per recruitment lead fell from A$43.75 in 2022 to A$18.39 in 2025. Lower lead cost does not by itself establish a lower cost per signed franchise agreement. Read the case study, or see how we run the whole funnel.
