How do franchise candidates use AI search to shortlist brands?
More franchise candidates start their research inside ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews instead of a page of search results. They ask for shortlists and comparisons before they visit any brand site. If an assistant can't describe your network accurately, you're not on the shortlist, and you never see the loss.
How do candidates use AI assistants?
They ask which franchises suit a budget, how a category compares, what a territory costs. The answer comes in one place and the candidate acts on it. Exclusion happens before the click, and you can't retarget someone who never arrived.
Why would an assistant leave your franchise out?
Usually because it can't verify what you claim. Assistants lean on sources that corroborate each other, so a network with vague numbers and no third-party references gets skipped for one that can be checked. It's a trust and retrievability problem, not a ranking problem in the old sense.
What makes a franchise brand citable?
- Specific, verifiable numbers: investment range, capital required, territories open.
- Plain answers under the questions candidates actually type.
- Third-party corroboration: press, directories, reviews with real names.
Most franchise sites don't give an assistant much to work with. In our 2026 study of 200 franchise brands, only 14% of recruitment page hero sections (29 of 200) said who the franchise is for.
Does this replace paid ads?
No. It decides who is on the shortlist your ads then compete inside. Paid still buys reach and speed, and it works better when the candidate has already seen your name in a credible answer. Treat it as the research layer in front of the funnel you already run.
How should a franchisor start?
Ask the assistants what they say about your network today, then fix the gap between that and the truth. Publish real answers with real numbers, and build third-party corroboration. Most networks have never checked; the first check usually finds silence or an out-of-date description. Related: the most common recruitment marketing mistakes.
